The president of a Washington (DC) Hospital Center said Wednesday that findings from an internal review have prompted the hospital to begin proceedings to dismiss 15 nurses for missing work because of a blizzard. The hospital initially planned to discipline 11 nurses, but has added four to the list since it launched an investigation last week. Read more

REALLY??? I would rather work an extra shift than see one of my fellow coworkers drive in dangerous condition and get into an accident! We don't have Mandatory Overtime anymore, EXCEPT in extenuating circumstances, depending on the weather, this may be one of those. RN in RI
I believe it is unreaonable to require anyone to risk thier safety to get to work, cos should they get injured, they may never be available to do the job or any other job for that matter. Justification for such an action would altimately depend on the facilities put in place to ensure staff are able to come in safely, bearing in mind things like babysitting arrangements etc ----
You don't know what circumstance caused them to stay home. The blizzard, child care.... etc.,The hospital doesn't look beyond itself to the people who really make the place run effectively and effeceintly in the first place. It's to bad they may just be letting go some of thier best employees for the wrong reasons, yet they keep and still hire others (I'm sure)for even worse reasons.
I agree!! But I thought that the hospital offered rides to the nurses who could not make it in... Is that true???
I also have stayed until someone could safely make it in....
No one should be fired for being unable to come to work in a blizzard! If she tries to come in(for fear of losing her job) and gets into a serious accicent or becomes stranded because of deep snow, the hospital may be liable for her injury! This creates a dangerous and hostile work environment If childcare is an issue, you will not transport a child in a blizzard to a babysitter! Not many have a live-in babysitter! Don't forget, even if transport is provided for the nurse in, there is no transport out. She will be stuck there for a few days until the roads are clear - thereby needing a live-in babysitter. Also, people can be sick on a bad weather day. No one should be forced to go to work for fear of losing her job! I would think that is illegal!
