On March 28, RI Hospital UNAP members overwhelmingly voted by 876 to 14 to reject a Lifespan proposal to reduce wages and benefits. At the five membership meetings held throughout the day, RNs, respiratory therapists, diagnostic imaging techs and others expressed skepticism about the need for permanent cuts in wages and benefits, noting the fact that Lifespan hospitals are the wealthiest and most profitable in Rhode Island. Union members also expressed anger about CEO salary increases and recent bonuses paid to Lifespan executives.
The proposed givebacks have already been imposed on non-union employees throughout the Lifespan system.

as a member of one of the non union hospitals.......i can tell you that we may not be non union for long.........the ceo bonuses should tell eveyone that lifespan has plenty of money no matter what they tell us...actions speak much louder than words
in this economy we should be all greatful for jobs.. if there are layoffs at ri hospital it is their own fault.. unfortunately it wont be the nurses that are greedy but the accesory people who need their jobs more and wont easily find another.. greed is the root of all evil..
I second that, the nurses are the backbone of all hospitals Try to do anything without this vital part....
In this economy I believe we are all grateful for our jobs. At least I know that I am. If there are any lay offs at RIH and the key word here is IF, it is no ones fault. No matter which way UNAP members voted the hospital still retains the right to lay off employees where they feel they are no longer need due to low census, etc. Lifespan proposed a list of several benefits and our raise for the year that they want to take away for no good reason on their part. We would never get any of it back even if lifespan remains financially healthy, but you better believe the CEO would get a fat bonus. UNAP as a group has the right to reject these ridiculous proposals and I feel that we did the right thing. Don't forget UNAP is made up of more than just the nurses. And another thing who is to say that a nurse doesn't need a job just as much if not more than an ancillary staff? Nurses are no more greedy than anyone else at RIH.
If there is any question that by rejecting the proposed cutbacks & fear of layoffs all you had to do this past week is look at the projo to see that RIH has asked to recruit more foreign staff nurses because there is an RN shortage. I know from just being reorg'd that they need us. However, how can there be such a shortage if there are hiring freezes and new RN grads, floats .... who can't get positions. What's up w/that? I believe it truly wasn't greed on our part but mgmt would get a nice bonus for saving money by our concessions so the money saved by us giving it up would end up in mgmt's bonus pocket rather than mine. Truthfully I need the money just as much as anyone else. Dont' forget that w/all the layoffs the unap worker may be the only breadwinner in the family & by cutting back may not be able to keep afloat. Everything costs more & the economic stimulus pkg comes out of our pockets thru taxes in a multitude of ways. If lifespan was teetering on the brink & they asked "only" for no pay raise I believe they would have gotten the concession but they aren't & asked for so much more, talk about greed. Truly look at the "Big Picture" not just bits & pieces
